Transcript: The Agenda's Week in Review | Sep 06, 2019

Steve stands in the studio. He's slim, clean-shaven, in his fifties, with short curly brown hair. He's wearing a dark blue suit, white shirt, and gray plaid tie.
A wall screen behind him reads "The week in review."

Steve says THE AGENDA THIS WEEK
EVALUATED THE SUMMER THAT WAS
FOR THE FORD GOVERNMENT, AND
SCANNED ECONOMIC INDICATORS FOR
SIGNS OF RECESSION.
THE AGENDA'S WEEK IN REVIEW
BEGINS BY GOING BACK TO SCHOOL,
WITH ONTARIO'S MINISTER OF
EDUCATION, STEPHEN LECCE.

Music plays as an animated slate reads "The week in review."

In a clip, Steve sits with guests in the studio.
A caption reads "A new year for Ontario schools. Increasing class sizes."

Steve says THIS SEEMS TO BE,
THIS CHANGE OF APPROACH,
SUGGESTS THAT THE FIRST YEAR WAS
A BIT OF A DISASTER.
WOULD YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT?

The caption changes to "Stephen Lecce. Minister of Education."

Lecce is in his early thirties, with short brown hair and a stubble. He's wearing a blue suit and a white shirt.

He says LOOK, I
THINK WE'RE ALWAYS LEARNING IN
GOVERNMENT AND I THINK ANYONE
WHO IS SUGGESTING PERFECTION...

The caption changes to "tvo.org/theagenda; agendaconnect@tvo.org."

Steve says I THINK THE
SUGGESTION WAS IT WAS A LONG WAY
FROM PERFECTION.

Lecce says I THINK MY ADMISSION TO YOU
IS, THE PREMIER HAS SAID, AS
HAVE ALL MEMBERS OF CABINET, WE
CAN ALL DO BETTER IN THE SERVICE
OF THE PEOPLE.
AND WHILE I RECOGNIZE, STEVE,
THAT WE HAVE TO BE BETTER AS A
GOVERNMENT, INCLUDING MYSELF, AT
TELEGRAPHING OUR MOTIVATION FOR
CHANGE AND WHY WE'RE
IMPLEMENTING REFORM, WHY WE'RE
INTRODUCING MORE MONIES FOR MATH
OR INTRODUCING NEW CURRICULA OR
MAKING SENSE OF THE SEX ED
CURRICULUM, WE CAN ALWAYS DO
BETTER.
MY COMMITMENT TO PARENTS,
EDUCATORS, TO TAXPAYERS AND KIDS
OF THE PROVINCE, IS I WANT TO
ASPIRE TO DO BETTER...

Steve says YOU MENTION THE SEX
ED CURRICULUM, SO LET'S GO
THERE.
FORMER PREMIER KATHLEEN WYNNE, A FORMER EDUCATION MINISTER, WHO
HAD THIS TO SAY ABOUT THE
REVISED SEX ED CURRICULUM THAT
YOUR GOVERNMENT, STEPHEN LECCE,
HAS BROUGHT OUT.
THE CLIP, PLEASE.

A clip plays on screen with the caption "August 22, 2019."
In the clip, Kathleen Wynne reads a statement.

She says THE OPPOSITION TO THE SEX ED
PORTION OF THE HEALTH AND
PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM
WAS ALWAYS BASED IN LIES AND
MISINFORMATION, AND SO WE SAW
TWO CONSERVATIVE LEADERS,
PATRICK BROWN AND DOUG FORD, USE
THOSE LIES TO PROPEL THEMSELVES
TO LEADERSHIP, AND NOW, WHEN THE
POLITICAL UTILITY OF THOSE LIES
HAS RUN ITS COURSE, THEN THERE'S
AN OPPORTUNISTIC BACKTRACKING
THAT HAPPENED.

The clip ends.
The caption changes to "Revamping the Sex-ed curriculum."

Steve says YOU KNOW, SHE'S BEEN
AT QUEEN'S PARK FOR 16 YEARS AND
I DON'T KNOW THAT I'VE EVER
HEARD HER SO OFTEN AND SO FIRMLY
ACCUSE HER POLITICAL OPPOSITES
OF LYING, USING THAT WORD
"LYING."
SO LET'S JUST ASK THE QUESTION:
DID YOUR PARTY, IN THE LEADUP TO
THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN, AND THEN
THROUGHOUT, TORQUE THIS WHOLE
SEX ED THING FOR POLITICAL
PURPOSES?

The caption changes to "The Week in Review. @theagenda. Tvo.org."

Lecce says I THINK THERE WAS A CRITICAL
MASS OF PARENTS IN THE PROVINCE
WHO RENDERED A JUDGMENT ON THE
AGE-APPROPRIATENESS OF THE
PHYSICAL HEALTH CURRICULUM UNDER
FORMER PREMIER WYNNE.
I THINK THE CONCERN ACTUALLY HAD
LESS TO DO WITH, ALTHOUGH THERE
WAS CERTAINLY SOME CONCERN, ON
THE SUBSTANCE OF THE CURRICULUM.
I THINK LARGELY IT HAD TO DO
WITH THE OFFENSIVE NATURE OF HOW
THEY IMPLEMENTED THE CURRICULUM.

The caption changes to "Watch us anytime: tvo.org, Twitter: @theagenda, Facebook Live, YouTube."

Steve says WHAT WAS OFFENSIVE
ABOUT IT?

The caption changes to "For more on this story visit: tvo.org/theagenda."

Lecce says INTELLECTUALLY I THINK THERE
IS A PROBLEM, STEVE, WHEN YOU
HAVE DRAFTED A CURRICULUM AND
THEN LAUNCH A CONSULTATION
AFTER, EFFECTIVELY WRITING IT.
THAT WAS THE MAJOR CRITICISM OF
PARTIES ACROSS PARTY LINES,
INCLUDING NEW DEMOCRATS, AS YOU
WILL RECALL, SAYING YOU CAN'T
WRITE A DOCUMENT BEFORE YOU
LAUNCH A CONSULTATION AND
PARENTS FELT THEY WEREN'T HEARD.
THAT IS THE CRITICAL CONTRAST
POINT BETWEEN THEIR APPROACH AND
OURS.
WE WON OUT, UNDERTAKING THE
LARGEST CURRICULUM CONSULTATION
IN THE HISTORY OF OUR MINISTRY,
72,000 POINTS OF CONTACT, PEOPLE
PROVIDING PERSPECTIVE,
EDUCATORS, KIDS THEMSELVES, AND
OF COURSE PARENTS.
THAT WAS WHAT UNDERPINNED OUR
REFORMS TO PLAY MAJOR EMPHASIS
ON SAFETY, MAKE IT
AGE-APPROPRIATE, AND MAKE SURE
IT'S A MODERN DOCUMENT SO EVERY
CHILD CAN SEE THEMSELVES IN THE
CURRICULUM.

Now music plays as an animated slate reads "The week in review."

Steve sits with two female guests.
A caption reads "A critical eye on education. Bigger classes, more savings?"

The caption changes to "Marit Stiles. NDP Education Critic."

Stiles is in her forties, with shoulder-length straight blond hair. She's wearing a burgundy blazer over a black blouse, and a thin pendant necklace.

She says I WOULD REALLY PREFER IF THE
GOVERNMENT WAS JUST UP FRONT AND
HONEST, ACTUALLY, ABOUT WHAT
THEY'RE TRYING TO ACHIEVE HERE.
IF THEY WANT TO JUST FLASH
EDUCATION AND FIND A LOT OF
SAVINGS IN EDUCATION, THEN BE
FORTH RIGHT ABOUT THAT.
BECAUSE RIGHT NOW I FEEL THAT
IT'S A LOT OF SMOKE AND MIRRORS.
AT THE END OF THE DAY, OUR
EDUCATION SYSTEM HAS BEEN UNDER
A LOT OF STRAIN FOR MANY YEARS.
NO OTHER GOVERNMENT HAS HAD THE
COURAGE TO MAKE THE DECISIONS
THAT NEED TO BE MADE IN TERMS OF
HOW WE FUND PUBLIC EDUCATION.
THIS GOVERNMENT IS CHOOSING TO
USE OUR STUDENTS, AGAIN, AS
POLITICAL PAWNS AND THE
BARGAINING THAT THEY'RE DOING
OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, AND I
JUST FIND THAT SHAMEFUL.

Steve says LET ME JUST MAKE
SURE I UNDERSTAND.
WHAT IS THE COURAGEOUS DECISION
THAT YOU THINK NEEDS TO BE MADE
THAT NEITHER HER PARTY NOR THE
TORIES HAVE MADE?

The caption changes to "Marit Stiles. NDP MPP, Davenport."

Stiles says OH, WOW.
WE KNOW WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE,
RIGHT?
THE FUNDING FORMULA IS DEEPLY
FLAWED IN OUR SYSTEM.
SO WHAT HAS HAPPENED IS WHEN THE
PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT FAILED TO
ADDRESS THOSE FUNDAMENTAL ISSUES
IN THE FUNDING FORMULA, THEY
INSTEAD KIND OF THREW PATCHWORK
QUILT OF LITTLE BAND-AIDS OVER
ISSUES, AND IN FACT I THINK AT
THE END OF THE DAY, IT KIND OF
UNDERMINES THE WHOLE SYSTEM AND
IT LEFT THE SYSTEM OPEN TO THE
KINDS OF CUTS THAT WE'RE SEEING
NOW THAT THIS GOVERNMENT IS
BRINGING IN.
SO I WANT TO SEE... I ACTUALLY
WANT TO SEE A FUNDING FORMULA
THAT'S REVAMPED, THAT'S CHANGED
COMPLETELY, THAT ACTUALLY PUTS
THE FOCUS BACK ON STUDENT NEEDS,
WHICH IS WHERE THE CURRENT
FUNDING FORMULA GOES DEEPLY
WRONG.

The caption changes to "The Week in Review. @theagenda. Tvo.org."

Steve says DO YOU WANT TO
RESPOND TO THAT?

The caption changes to "Mitzie Hunter. Liberal MPP, Scarborough-Guildwood."

Hunter is in her early forties, with chin-length curly black hair. She's wearing a white blazer over an indigo blouse, and a silver chain necklace.

She says WELL, I DON'T AGREE WITH THAT
BECAUSE WE INCREASED THE FUNDING
EXPONENTIALLY IN TERMS OF
EDUCATION, AND THAT LED TO AN
18 percent INCREASE IN THE GRADUATION
RATE, IT LED TO GROUND-BREAKING
CHANGES IN THINGS LIKE FULL-DAY
KINDERGARTEN THAT NOW IS PART OF
OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT
PARENTS AND STUDENTS THEMSELVES
ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO EACH AND
EVERY YEAR.
SO DOES THAT MEAN THAT THE
SYSTEM DOESN'T NEED TO
CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE?
OF COURSE IT DOES.
THERE ARE MANY ASPECTS THAT NEED
TO IMPROVE AND THE FUNDING
FORMULA IS SOMETHING THAT IS
REVIEWED ON AN ANNUAL BASIS,
WHERE YOU'RE LOOKING AT WHAT
ASPECTS OF THIS VERY LARGE AND
COMPLEX SYSTEM DO WE NEED TO
CHANGE, DO WE NEED TO IMPROVE?
WE NEED TO MAKE INVESTMENTS, FOR
INSTANCE, IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
SO THAT STUDENTS WHO ARE SOME OF
OUR MOST VULNERABLE STUDENTS
HAVE THE SUPPORTS THAT THEY NEED
IN SCHOOL.

The caption changes to "For more on this story visit: tvo.org/theagenda."

Hunter continues SO I WOULD SAY THAT UNDER THE
LIBERALS, WE SAW AN EXPONENTIAL
INCREASE IN THE OUTCOMES FOR
EDUCATION, BUT DO WE HAVE MORE
TO DO? ABSOLUTELY.

Now music plays as an animated slate reads "The week in review."

A guest speaks in the studio.
A caption reads "A renewed Ford government? The French connection."

The caption changes to "Brian Lilley. Toronto Sun."

Brian is in his forties, clean-shaven, with short blond hair shaven at the temples. He's wearing a gray suit and a white shirt.

He says I GOT TO KNOW DOUG FORD
INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF POLITICS
OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS COVERING
HIM BOTH AS A POLITICIAN AND
JUST CHATTING WITH HIM WHEN HE
WAS OUTSIDE POLITICS, AND HE CAN
BE INTROSPECTIVE.
YEAH, DOES HE SHOW UP FOR A
FIGHT SOMETIMES?
LIKE ANY GOOD POLITICIAN WOULD.
I'VE NEVER MET ONE THAT'S
SUCCESSFUL THAT WOULDN'T.
BUT YOU'LL SURROUND YOURSELF
WITH PEOPLE THAT WILL EITHER
TEMPER OR INFLAME THINGS WITH
YOU, AND DEAN FRENCH WAS THE
KIND OF GUY WHO WOULD INFLAME
THINGS, FOR BETTER OR WORSE, AND
I HAVE NO ILL WILL TOWARDS DEAN
FRENCH, BUT HE WASN'T A GOOD FIT
FOR THE PREMIER THAT DOUG FORD
WAS.
YOU KNOW, YOU JUST HAVE TO LOOK
AT THE CABINET SHUFFLE.
THAT WAS ABOUT A RE-SET.
AND I DON'T REMEMBER IF YOU WERE
THERE, ALISON, BUT MARTIN, I
BELIEVE YOU WERE THERE, AND
DOING THE SCRUM WITH DOUG FORD
RIGHT AFTER THE CABINET SHUFFLE
IS ANNOUNCED AND I SAID TO HIM,
IS THE FACT THAT YOU'VE PUT ALL
THESE PEOPLE INTO NEW POSITIONS
WHERE YOU'VE GOT COMMUNICATIONS
PROBLEMS AND YOU'VE TAKEN YOUR
BEST COMMUNICATORS AND PUT THEM
IN, IS IT A SIGNAL THAT YOU'VE
GOT A COMMUNICATIONS PROBLEM?
HE SAID, BRIAN, YOU'RE
100 PERCENT RIGHT.
I EXPLAINED WE'VE GOT TO DO
COMMUNICATIONS BETTER.
TWO HOURS LATER, YOU'VE GOT THE
NEWS RELEASE GOING OUT ABOUT
THESE UNQUALIFIED PEOPLE GETTING
JOBS.

Steve says THE PATRONAGE
SCANDAL.

The caption changes to "The Week in Review. @theagenda. Tvo.org."

Brian says AND THAT BLEW APART ANY GOOD
NEWS THEY WERE GOING TO GET.
THEY HANDLED THE CABINET SHUFFLE
RELATIVELY WELL CONSIDERING WHAT
THEY WERE GOING INTO IT WITH.
AND THAT BLEW IT UP.
AND SO WITHIN 24 HOURS I'M
WRITING THE COLUMN SAYING DEAN
FRENCH HAS TO GO, AND HE WAS
GONE.
THERE'S AN INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT
TONE NOW THAT HE'S NOT THERE.
FULL DISCLOSURE, BY THE WAY:
JAMIE WALLACE, WHO IS NOW THE
CHIEF OF STAFF, WAS THE GUY THAT
HIRED ME AT THE TORONTO SUN THE
SECOND TIME.

Steve says YOU'VE ANTICIPATED
MY FOLLOW-UP WHICH IS, YES, HE
RAN THE SUN NEWSPAPERS, YOU
WORKED FOR THE SUN.
I PRESUME YOU KNEW HIM WELL.
HOW DO YOU SEE THINGS CHANGING
NOW THAT HE'S IN CHARGE?

The caption changes to "Brian Lilley, @brianlilley."

Brian says IT'S JUST A DIFFERENT TONE.
I TALK TO HIM ONCE IN A WHILE,
NO MORE THAN I TALK TO ANY OTHER
PERSON IN THAT SORT OF POSITION,
BUT IT IS A DIFFERENT TONE.
HE'S A VERY CALM INDIVIDUAL.
TRYING TO GET JAMIE WALLACE
EXCITED IS A DIFFICULT TASK.

Steve says HOW DO YOU SEE
THINGS CHANGING, ALLISON, NOW
THAT WE HAVE A NEW CHIEF OF
STAFF IN THE PROVINCE?

The caption changes to "Allison Smith. Queen's Park Today."

Allison is in her late thirties, with chin-length straight blond hair. She's wearing a black blazer and a floral print black shirt.

She says TO ME IT'S A GOOD THING.
THIS HAS BEEN SAID BEFORE.
BUT THE LAST THING POLITICIANS
WANT IS THEIR CHIEF OF STAFF ON
THE COVER OF A NEWSPAPER, RIGHT?
PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES
SHOULDN'T BE OUT FRONT AND
CENTRE.
AND, YOU KNOW, BY ALL ACCOUNTS,
HE WAS MAKING MPPs CRY AND,
YOU KNOW, YOU DON'T WANT THAT
EITHER.
HOWEVER, I MEAN, IF WE'RE
FRAMING THIS AROUND A RE-SET,
HOW MUCH CREDIT DO WE REALLY
WANT TO GIVE A GOVERNMENT OR A
PREMIER FOR, YOU KNOW, HIRING A
REASONABLE AND RESPONSIBLE TOP
MANAGER WITHIN 14 MONTHS OF
BEING ELECTED?
I MEAN, THAT'S GOOD, BUT IT'S
KIND OF, TO ME, SEEMS LIKE A
PRETTY LOW BAR TO BE
CONGRATULATING SOMEONE FOR.

Steve says WHY DON'T WE STATE
THE OBVIOUS, WHICH IS THAT DOUG
FORD BECAME THE PREMIER OF
ONTARIO WITH NO EXPERIENCE IN
PROVINCIAL POLITICS.

Allison says ABSOLUTELY.

Steve says HE HAD AS HIS CHIEF
OF STAFF, DEAN FRENCH WHO HAD NO
EXPERIENCE IN PROVINCIAL
POLITICS, OR VIRTUALLY NONE, AND
THESE TWO ARE NOW RUNNING A...
WHAT'S THE LATEST BUDGET...
150 BILLION dollar CORPORATION?
YOU KNOW, MAYBE WE SHOULDN'T BE
SURPRISED, MARTIN, THAT THERE
WERE A LOT OF BUMPS ON THE ROAD
IN THE FIRST YEAR.

The caption changes to "Martin Regg Cohn. Toronto Star."

Martin is in his late forties, clean-shaven, with short brown hair. He's wearing glasses, a tan suit and a white shirt.

He says I THINK THAT'S A FAIR POINT.
I THINK THAT'S PART OF THE
EXPLANATION, BUT IT DOESN'T
EXPLAIN AWAY ALLISON'S POINT.
I THINK IT COULD HAVE TAKEN LESS
THAN 14 MONTHS TO FIGURE OUT
THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY
WERE DOING OR THAT DEAN FRENCH
THOUGHT HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS
DOING BY PICKING A FIGHT
EVERYWHERE.
THERE'S NO QUESTION THEY CAME
IN... WE SAW THAT WITH THE NDP
GOVERNMENT OF BOB RAE, FOR
EXAMPLE.

The caption changes to "For more on this story visit: tvo.org/theagenda."

Martin continues THEY DIDN'T THINK THEY WERE
GOING TO WIN AND THEY WERE
FLUMMOXED IN THEIR FIRST FEW
MONTHS. FAIR POINT.
BUT WE CAN'T IGNORE THE MESS
THAT DEAN FRENCH LEFT BEHIND.

The caption changes to "For more on this story visit: tvo.org/theagenda."

Steve sits with different guests.
A caption reads "Economic upheaval in a global economy. Trade troubles."

Steve says IT'S NOT JUST THE
TARIFF WAR, THOUGH, LINDA, THE
PRESIDENT ALSO TWEETED THAT HE
BELIEVED THAT AMERICAN
BUSINESSES IN CHINA OUGHT TO
CLOSE SHOP AND COME HOME.
HE SAID THAT.

Linda says HE DID.

Steve says HOW CONSTRUCTIVE IS THAT?

The caption changes to "Linda Nazareth. Macdonald Laurier Institute."

Linda is in her early fifties, with shoulder-length wavy chestnut hair. She's wearing a pale pink blazer and a silver pendant necklace.

She says IT'S NOT CONSTRUCTIVE.
I THINK HE DID HAVE TO BACKTRACK
ON THAT A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE IT
WOULD BE VERY HARD TO MAKE THAT
HAPPEN.
BUT, YOU KNOW, JUST TO COME BACK
TO THE IDEA OF TRADE.
IF YOU ONLY REMEMBER ONE THING
FROM YOUR ECONOMICS AT
UNIVERSITY, IT'S THAT TRADE IS
GOOD, RIGHT?
DESTROYING TRADE WILL USUALLY
DESTROY AN ECONOMY.
THAT'S HISTORICALLY SOMETHING
THAT'S BEEN TRUE.
SO I THINK IT'S A LITTLE BIT
TRAGIC THAT THIS IS HAPPENING.
TO PICK UP WHAT MIKE SAID
EARLIER THAT RECESSIONS ARE
INEVITABLE.
I'M GOING TO QUOTE BEN BERNANKE,
FORMER HEAD OF THE U.S. FEDERAL
RESERVE.
HE SAID BUSINESS CYCLES DO NOT
DIE, THEY'RE MURDERED.
AND THIS ONE IS BEING MURDERED.

Steve says THAT'S A GREAT LINE.
BEN BERNANKE LINE, RIGHT?
GREAT LINE.
HOW MUCH WORSE DID THE
PRESIDENT'S COMMENT ABOUT, IF
YOU'RE DOING BUSINESS IN CHINA,
YOU'RE A TRAITOR.
BRING YOUR BUSINESS HOME.
I DEMAND THAT YOU BRING YOUR
BUSINESS HOME TO THE UNITED
STATES.
HOW MUCH DID THAT EXACERBATE THE SITUATION?

The caption changes to "Mike Moffatt. Western University."

Mike is in his late forties, clean-shaven, with short gray hair. He's wearing a blue suit, white shirt, and pink tie.

He says WELL, IT CERTAINLY DIDN'T
HELP, THOUGH, YOU KNOW, WHAT ARE
WE ON?
THE 2,000th CRAZY TWEET FROM
THE PRESIDENT.
I THINK NOW WE'RE ALL SORT OF
IMMUNE TO IT.
IT'S NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM A
DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY ORDERING
BUSINESS PEOPLE TO MOVE YOUR
PRODUCTION.
THE PRESIDENT NEEDS TO REALIZE
THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER
COUNTRIES OUT THERE.
SO IF CHINA BECOMES TOO
EXPENSIVE BECAUSE OF TARIFFS,
THEY'RE NOT NECESSARILY GOING TO
MOVE BACK TO THE UNITED STATES,
AND WE'RE SEEING THIS.
SO GOOGLE JUST ANNOUNCED A
COUPLE WEEKS AGO THAT THEY'RE
PRODUCING THEIR NEW SMARTPHONE
IN VIETNAM.
WE HAVE THE INDIA GOVERNMENT
UNDER MODI, THEY'VE IDENTIFIED
NINE DIFFERENT SECTORS,
TELECOMMUNICATIONS,
PHARMACEUTICALS, AND SO ON, SAID
WE'RE GOING TO TRY TO GET APPLE
TO OUR COUNTRY, WE'RE GOING TO
TRY AND GET THESE OTHER
COMPANIES TO OUR COUNTRY.
SO I THINK THAT'S WHAT WE MIGHT
SEE AS THE SUPPLY CHAINS CHANGE,
THAT THEY MIGHT LEAVE CHINA, BUT
THAT DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN
THEY'RE GOING TO GO TO THE
UNITED STATES.
THEY'RE GOING TO PLACES LIKE
VIETNAM, PHILIPPINES, INDIA,
INDONESIA, AND SO ON.

Steve says JASON, I HAVE TO
TELL YOU A LITTLE STORY AS I SET
UP THIS NEXT QUESTION, WHICH IS,
OVER THE SUMMER, I WAS ON THE
DOCK OF THE MARINA IN KAGAWONG,
ONTARIO, POPULATION ABOUT 100,
MAYBE 105 WHEN MY FAMILY SHOWS
UP, AND THERE WERE SOME VISITORS
FROM MICHIGAN THERE, HUSBAND,
WIFE, AND 20-SOMETHING DAUGHTER.
AND I ASKED THEM ABOUT THE
PRESIDENT, ABOUT THE TRADE WAR
WITH CHINA AND THE TARIFFS AND
SO ON, AND I ASKED... I KEPT IT
VERY NEUTRAL AND OPEN-ENDED, THE
QUESTION.
I SAID, "WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT
WHAT DONALD TRUMP IS DOING SO
FAR?"
AND THE FIRST THING THE HUSBAND
SAID IS "STICKING IT TO CHINA."
HE'S A SMALL BUSINESS PERSON IN
MICHIGAN.
YOU KNOW THAT HURTS YOUR BOTTOM
LINE?
HE SAID I KNOW BUT WE HAVE TO DO
IT.
HOW MUCH DOES THAT ATTITUDE
CONTRIBUTE TO THE PREDICAMENT
THE U.S. FINDS ITSELF IN?

The caption changes to "Jason Kirby. Business Journalist. @jason_kirby."

Jason is in his early fifties, balding, with a gray stubble. He's wearing a blue suit and a purple shirt.

He says THAT'S FROM HIS BASE AND HE'S
APPEALING TO IT STRONGLY AND
DEFINITELY IT'S A WIDELY-HELD
SENTIMENT.
IT'S INTERESTING, THOUGH, WHEN
YOU HAVE ALL THE RHETORIC AROUND
THE CHINA-U.S. TRADE WAR AND
THERE ARE ALL THESE TWEETS AND
JUST THE ANGRY LANGUAGE... I
MEAN, WE'VE, IN CANADA HERE,
HEARD ALL THIS BEFORE.
WE WENT THROUGH THIS.
WE WERE LIKE THE ROUGH DRAFT OF
THE CHINA-U.S. TRADE WAR.
WHAT'S INTERESTING FROM THAT WAS
THAT AT THE END OF THE DAY,
DESPITE ALL THE UPHEAVAL AND THE
CHAOS THAT CAME OUT OF IT, WE
ENDED UP WITH A TRADE DEAL THAT
IS STILL YET TO BE RATIFIED THAT
WAS NOT ALL THAT DIFFERENT FROM
THE SCENARIO, THE SITUATION THAT
WE HAD BEFORE...

The caption changes to "For more on this story visit: tvo.org/theagenda."

Steve says THAT'S NOT TRUE.
THE PRESIDENT SAID BEFORE...

Jason says EXACTLY.

Steve says NOW IT'S THE
GREATEST EVER.

Jason says EXACTLY.

Steve says SO YOU'RE WRONG.
I'M SORRY.

(OVERLAPPING TALKING)

The clips end and Steve stands in the studio alone.

He says AND THAT'S SOME OF
WHAT WE COVERED THIS PAST WEEK
ON THE AGENDA.
